Furna is a place on the east coast of the Cape Verde island of Brava and its only permanent port. It had 612 inhabitants at the 2010 census and is located about 2.5 kilometers east of the island's capital, Vila Nova Sintra .

history

The port of Furna is protected on three sides by towering rock walls, as it was created in a volcanic crater washed over by the sea . It has existed since 1843 and ensures the supply of the isolated island of Brava with external goods. In 1982 numerous boats and some houses were destroyed by waves ten meters high from hurricane Beryl . In 2000 a quay was inaugurated, which is used as a landing stage for modern ferries. Since January 2011, Furna has been approached almost daily by the Kriola high-speed ferry , which connects Brava with the neighboring islands of Fogo and Praia.

Transport connections and infrastructure

After the airfield at Fajã de Água was closed , Furna offers the only regular access to the island of Brava. The place is connected to the island's capital Vila Nova Sintra by two roads , only one of which can be used by cars. When the ferry arrives, the Aluguers , a kind of shared taxis, which are common in Cape Verde, are waiting at the port .

There are some small shops and bars in the main street of the village. There are no overnight accommodations for tourists.

Townscape

Furna has no sights to offer; However, the partially concreted mountain slopes of the disused fish factory, which are used to collect rainwater, are interesting. Large wall paintings on the new school, financed by Belgium, are intended to motivate children to use water sparingly and to help with the greening of the island.
