Futebol de Causas (international title: "Football with a cause") is a documentary film about the football team of the Académica de Coimbra and their role in the resistance against the dictatorship in Portugal until the Carnation Revolution in 1974.

action

The film documents the history and the consequences of the student protests, which on the occasion of the cup final in 1969 could no longer be concealed from the Portuguese public by the propaganda of the Estado Novo regime. Benfica Lisbon faced the student association Académica from Coimbra in the final of the national cup , and the numerous students and opponents of the regime among the spectators took the opportunity to draw attention to the imprisoned students and the ongoing unrest in the country's universities. With today's memories of active people at the time, historical recordings, original documents and journalistic parts, the prehistory is reconstructed and the further course is told from the perspective of the students of the association. At that time, the club had a special position in professional football in the country, as their football squads were not professional footballers, and the majority were also driven by progressive social ideas.

reception

The film recalls an almost forgotten episode in the country's popular football sport. Since match operations and reporting are primarily determined by the three most successful teams Benfica Lisbon, Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto , the film about the special historical role of Académica Coimbra gained some attention in football-loving Portugal. The viewers were surprised by a few scenes, for example when they learned that the final in 1969 was the only one in Portuguese football history that the President stayed away from and did not present the trophy, or when Mário Wilson , known as the national coach and Benfica couch , was here as a deeply convinced Académica supporter, of which he was captain in 1969.

The film was shown at various festivals (2009 including Doclisboa and Caminhos do Cinema Português ), also in Germany (Altes Finanzamt Berlin 2010), and was released on DVD in 2010 (OmUEngl).
