drone , a technology carrier, as part of the Franco-British study, also known as the Future Combat Air System

In 2014, a Franco- British feasibility study called Future Combat Air System started in 2014 . At the latest with the presentation of the Tempest project by the Royal Air Force at the opening of the Farnborough Air Show on July 16, 2018, corresponding efforts had become superfluous.

On July 13, 2017, Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Emmanuel Macron announced their intention to develop a Franco-German fighter jet at a meeting of the Franco-German Council of Ministers in Paris. During the ILA 2018 in Berlin on April 25th, Dassault Aviation and Airbus Defense and Space announced an agreement to collaborate on the project. On April 26, 2018, Lieutenant General Erhard Bühler and Général d'armée aérienne André Lanata signed the High Level Common Operational Requirements Document at the ILA in Berlin-Schönefeld, which defines the core tasks of the aircraft. France should be in the lead in the development. On June 19, 2018, the two specialist ministers from Germany and France signed another declaration of intent.

Belgium wants to contribute 369 million euros to the program.

In the presence of the German Federal Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen and the French counterpart Florence Parly , the 65 million euro order from Dassault Aviation and Airbus for a two-year concept study was announced in Gennevilliers on February 6, 2019 . In addition, a letter of intent was signed between the French technology group Safran Aircraft Engines (until 2015: Snecma) and the German engine manufacturer MTU Aero Engines for the development of new jet engines for the new combat aircraft.

Spain joined the program on February 14, 2019. As part of the Paris Air Show , the defense ministers of the three participating countries signed a framework agreement on the joint development of the FCAS on June 17, 2019.

Objectives

An integrated system is planned that connects drones , combat aircraft , satellites as well as command and control aircraft . According to Dirk Hoke (CEO of Airbus Defense and Space ), the majority of the technology required will be developed in Europe. In addition, according to Hoke, the USA is striving for a high level of self-sufficiency. Above all, regulated goods according to US ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) guidelines should be avoided.

As a sixth generation fighter aircraft, it will be equipped with stealth technology , an adaptive versatility engine (ADVENT), network capability , possibly also with cyber warfare capabilities and also with energy weapons.
