Two clubs qualified for each of the eleven editions of the EHL: HC Dinamo Kazan from Russia and WKS Grunwald Posen from Poland. With the Belgian Royal Herakles HC, only one club has qualified that has not been there before. The English champions Surbiton HC decided against taking part because they feared that they would only be able to offer a weakened team due to the Commonwealth Games 2018 . Instead, Holcombe HC represents England as the first representative.

news
The EHL announced a number of changes on September 12, 2017.
Goal point system
The most important change concerns the counting of goals. Until then, every goal counted no matter how it was scored. However, from this season onwards, every field goal counts two and every goal from a short corner one point. For 7-meter goals it is decided whether they originated from a short corner (1 point) or from free play (2 points). This rule was adopted from the Hockey India League.
Placement games
The EHL introduces placement games for the teams eliminated in the round of 16. They play four placement games on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday as part of the quarter-finals. The winners of these games are ranked as a split ninth and the losers as a split twelfth. The news is connected with the change in the nation ranking .
Change of video referee
As since last season, the video referee is only available from the round of 16. There is also no video referee for the newly introduced placement games. In addition, a video referee can no longer be consulted during a shoot-out.
Preliminary round
The preliminary round took place from October 6th to 8th, 2017. The preliminary round was held in the Pau Negre Stadium in Barcelona . The participants were the worst-placed clubs in the participating associations. In the draw, the participants from the associations with three clubs ( Netherlands , Germany , Belgium and Spain ) were top-placed in the four groups of three. The regulations stipulate that every win brings 5 points, every draw 2 points and every defeat, with a maximum of two goals difference, one point. In the end, the first in the table qualified for the round of 16.
