Gábor Devecseri

Gábor Devecseri (born February 27, 1917 in Budapest ; † July 31, 1971 there ) was a Hungarian poet and translator. He translated the most important classics of Greek and Roman antiquity into modern Hungarian .

He published his first volume of poetry together with Gábor Karinthy when he was fifteen. In 1938 his translation of the poems of Catullus appeared with a foreword by Karl Kerényi . In 1941 he received his doctorate in classical philology, his dissertation dealt with the poetry of Callimachus . From 1942 to 1945 he worked as a librarian in the Baumgarten library. During this time he published translations of Plautus , Plato , Herodotus and Aristophanes. From 1945 he taught Greek literature at the University of Budapest and the history of art at the Academy of Drama. His translations of Homer appeared in 1947 ( Odyssey ) and 1952 ( Iliad ). Numerous volumes of poetry and essays appeared from 1945 until his death in 1971.

He belonged to the third generation of the literary magazine Nyugat . His enthusiasm for antiquity was influenced by Karl Kerényi, while he continued the tradition of Dezső Kosztolányi , Antal Szerb and Mihály Babits in his poetry .
