Gábor Jenő Pölöskei (born July 3, 1920 in Győr , † October 27, 1993 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian football player and coach .

Player career

Pölöskei began his career as a winger in the youth department of his home club Győri ETO FC . At the age of 18 he made his debut in the first team and remained loyal to the club during the war years. In 1946 he moved to the then second division club Diósgyőri VTK and helped the team to the championship and the associated promotion to the highest league in Hungary. In Diósgyőr , Pölöskei no longer played in the attack, but was increasingly used as an outside runner. His strong performances attracted the attention of Honvéd Budapest and the former head coach Ferenc Puskás Sr. . In 1950 he switched to the reigning Hungarian champion. There, Pölöskei was part of a team that was peppered with stars like Ferenc Puskás , József Bozsik and Gyula Lóránt and was able to celebrate numerous successes. After failing to recover from a serious knee injury, he retired in 1956. Overall, he played three times for the Hungarians without being able to score a goal. As an outside runner he could not displace József Zakariás and his club colleague József Bozsik in the Aranycsapat .

Coaching career

Pölöskei did not return to football until 1966 when he took over as coach at Bodajk FC Siófok . After four years he was released and returned to Honvéd . There he was responsible as the coach of the U19 and was loyal to the club for over seven years before his former club Diósgyőri VTK offered him the post of head coach. With his team, he managed to win the Hungarian Cup in 1980. Until the league cup win in 2014, this was the last title that Diósgyőr could win. After this success Pölöskei ended his coaching career.

Private life

Pölöskei was married and had 3 children who also became professional footballers. His son Gábor Pölöskei played for Ferencváros Budapest , among others . He lived with his family in the Budapest district of Pestszentlőrinc-Pestszentimre . In 1993 Pölöskei died suddenly at the age of 73 after a heart attack. His nephew Zsolt Pölöskei is also a professional footballer and currently plays for Honvéd Budapest .
