Géo Voumard

Géo Voumard (born December 2, 1920 in Biel / Bienne ; † September 3, 2008 in Sion ) was a Swiss composer , arranger , pianist and radio journalist . Together with Claude Nobs and René Langel , he founded the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1967 .

Life

Voumard, who performed publicly as a teenager, became arranger and pianist in the Hazy Osterwald Bigband in 1944 . After the big band switched to a sextet in 1948 , Voumard founded his own jazz trio. After touring Europe, he was a pianist and composer at Radio Lausanne from 1952 , and he also directed various music programs. From 1966 to 1983 he was head of the department at Radio Lausanne.

In 1956 Voumard won the first Eurovision Song Contest in Lugano together with Emile Gardaz as the composer of the song "Refrain", sung by Lys Assia .
