Göran Boije

Göran Nilsson Boije von Gennäs ( Swedish Göran Nilsson Boije af Gennäs ; * around 1540 , † December 7, 1617 in Gennäs) was a Swedish diplomat , field marshal and governor .

Life

Origin and family

Göran was a member of the Swedish noble family Boije af Gennäs . He was a son of the Swedish statesman Nils Andersson Boije († 1568) and the Brita Christiernsdotter, nee Horn af Kanckas († 1580). Göran married Anna Göransdotter Gyllenmåne till Högsjögård in 1592 and in 1616 with Magdalena Schade in their second marriage. The first marriage resulted in nine children.

Career

Boije was first mentioned as Rittmeister in 1564 . In 1566 he was sent to France on a diplomatic mission . He fought in several Northern Wars and was instrumental in various related diplomatic negotiations with Russia . In 1576 he was Swedish field marshal of all people of war in Finland and from 1577 to 1580, again from 1582 to 1583, Swedish governor in Reval, and from 1592 to 1600, Swedish governor in Estonia.In the late 1584, he became commander-in-chief of the fortresses of Wiborg , Nyslott and Kexholm . He was appointed to Lagman in 1585 and eventually advanced to Imperial Councilor in 1602 .

Göran was hereditary lord on Gennäs near Pojo and Kulla near Fellin , and in the 1590s also on the Hageweide and Löwenwolde estates in Jerwen . He was buried in the church of Pojo.
