Götz Alefeld (born June 9, 1941 in Poppenlauer , Bad Kissingen district ) is a German mathematician who primarily deals with numerical mathematics and there with a focus on interval arithmetic .

Life

Alefeld, who grew up in his birthplace, graduated from the Alexander von Humboldt-Gymnasium in Schweinfurt in 1961 and studied mathematics at the Technical University of Munich from 1961 to 1966 .

In 1968 he received his doctorate at Ulrich Kulish at the University of Karlsruhe Dr. rer. nat. ( Interval calculation over the complex numbers and some applications ), the habilitation followed in 1972.

In 1976 he was appointed full professor at the Technical University of Berlin . In 1981 he was appointed to the then Institute for Applied Mathematics at the University of Karlsruhe, where he took over the chair from Johannes Weissinger . Alefeld stayed in Karlsruhe until his retirement on September 30, 2009 , where he was the spokesman for the Institute for Applied and Numerical Mathematics. He not only trained mathematicians, but also several thousand civil engineering students in mathematics and collaborated scientifically with engineers.

Alefeld was involved in around 35 doctorates, and three of his students are now professors.

Honorary positions

Alefeld has been a member of the university senate and has been an active contributor to Karlsruhe university policy since 1991.

From 1989 to 1991 he was speaker of the conference of the mathematical departments KMathF .

Alefeld is one of the leading figures of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics ( GAMM eV ). He organized the GAMM annual conference in Karlsruhe in 1989 and was a member of the board for 14 years, from 1991 to 1998 as treasurer, from 1999 to 2001 as president and from 2002 to 2004 as vice-president.
