Günter Kessler

Günter Kessler (born March 1, 1934 in St. Ingbert , Germany ) is a German scientist and university professor.

Life

Günter Kessler studied mechanical engineering and reactor technology at RWTH Aachen University from 1958 to 1962 and received his doctorate in 1968 with a topic in reactor physics at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, now the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology , KIT .

He then worked as an experimental physicist on the joint research project SEFOR ( United States Atomic Energy Commission , General Electric and KIT ) in Fayetteville , USA . After his return in 1970 he was initially a member of the Karlsruhe fast breeder project management team and from 1975 became head of this project at the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center , now KIT. This project management was u. a. responsible for the coordination of the construction-accompanying research program for the breeder reactor with fast neutrons SNR-300 in Kalkar .

After a visiting professorship in 1978 at the Nuclear Engineering Department of the University of Wisconsin, USA, in 1979 he took over the management of the Institute for Neutron Physics and Reactor Technology INR at KIT . The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at KIT appointed him honorary professor in 1981.

From 1985 to 1999 he was a member of the German Reactor Safety Commission and at times its chairman.

From 1981 to 2008 he was also the European Associate Editor of the scientific journals Nuclear Technology and Nuclear Science and Engineering of the American Nuclear Society (ANS). From 1994 to 1996 he was visiting professor in China at Tsinghua University, Beijing.

He is married and has a daughter.

Prizes and awards

  • 1993 Membership Grade of Fellow of the American Nuclear Society for outstanding contributions to the advancement of nuclear science and engineering
  • 1994 Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany
  • 1994 Honorary Doctorate from the Novosibirsk State University, Russia
  • 2000 Award of the Institute of Nuclear Fusion of the Madrid Polytechnic University in recognition of the outstanding career in the field of nuclear science and engineering and the advancement of inertial fusion energy.
  • 2003 Distinguished Service Award of the American Nuclear Society in recognition of exceptional service to the ANS community including his activities as European Associate editor for both Nuclear Science and Engineering and Nuclear Technology
