Ervino Pocar
Ervino Pocar (born April 4, 1892 in Piran , Istria , Austria-Hungary ; died August 17, 1981 in Milan ) was an Italian literary scholar, German scholar and translator.
Life
Ervino Pocar came from a farming family. One of the brothers was the futuristic painter Sofronio Pocarini . The family moved to Görtz , where he attended high school. From 1912 he studied philology at the University of Vienna . During the First World War he was drafted as a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian Army . He completed his studies in 1917 and worked as a freelance translator from German in Italy after the war. He married Cesi De Rosa. In 1934 he was hired as a publisher's editor and translator at the Arnoldo Mondadori publishing house in Milan , where he determined the German program.
Pocar translated about 240 German works into Italian, poetry, prose and plays, philosophy and scientific treatises. Among the fiction were authors such as Hans Christian Andersen , Theodor Fontane , Goethe , Franz Grillparzer , ETA Hoffmann , Henrik Ibsen , Gottfried Keller , Heinrich von Kleist , Novalis and from the 20th century Heinrich Böll , Ernst Cassirer , Lion Feuchtwanger , Hugo von Hofmannsthal , Knut Hamsun , Franz Kafka , Erich Maria Remarque , Frank Wedekind and many others. By Robert Walser he translated L'assistente , of Joseph Roth the imperial Roman Il peso falso , by Thomas Mann I Buddenbrooks: decadenza di una famiglia and Doctor Faustus and Hermann Hesse to Il lupo della steppa and Il giuoco delle pearl di vetro .
Among the philosophical works were Arthur Schopenhauer's Aforismi sulla saggezza del vivere , among the geographical works the regional photographs in the Austrian coastal region by Carl von Czoernig . Pocar also translated works from third languages into Italian using their German translations as a basis, such as Henrik Ibsen's Casa di bambola .
In 1956, Pocar received the Goethe Medal in silver from the Goethe Institute in Munich. In 1970 he was honored for his life's work by the International Federation of Translators and in 1977 with an honorary doctorate from the University of Trieste . He was active in the “Associazione italiana traduttori e interpreti” and became its honorary president.
