Günter Mieth (Germanist)

Günter Mieth (born October 28, 1931 in Weigsdorf-Köblitz ; † August 21, 2013 in Leipzig ) was a German German philologist and literary historian who taught at the University of Leipzig .

Life

Mieth trained as an industrial clerk and then became a teacher and deputy headmaster. From 1954 to 1958 he studied German, education and philosophy at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig and received his doctorate in 1964.

In 1969 he became head of the German literary history department at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig and from 1969 to 1972 he moved to the University of Algiers as a lecturer and chef de la Section d'Allemand . In 1976 Mieth completed his habilitation and was appointed full professor for German literary history. Until his retirement in 1992, Mieth was deputy director for research in the section for German and literary studies at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig. In 1991/92 he was given a visiting professorship at the University of Besançon.

Günter Mieth headed the chair for German literature of the 18th century at the University of Leipzig for 15 years .
