Günter Szewierski

Günter Szewierski (born April 5, 1923 in Breslau ; † August 6, 2005 in Wismar ) was a German football player .

Szewierski began playing football in the Hertha Breslau school team when he was ten . At 17, the right defender made the leap into the men's team of Hertha, which played in the Gauliga Silesia .

After Szewierski had to move to World War II in 1941 , he was taken prisoner by the British in 1944. In 1948 after his release he came to Mecklenburg , where he joined the SG Wismar Süd . In his first year he played for the Mecklenburg State Championship, but lost the decisive last game against SG Schwerin with 2: 3. A year later the title was won against the same opponent.

Through this success Szewierski was able to qualify with the team for the first league season in the GDR. Although they got immediately down again, after the recovery followed in 1951/52 another season in the highest class. In these two years Szewierski played a total of 57 league games for the Hanseatic city. In 1957, the later honorary member had to end his career prematurely after a meniscus injury.

Szewierski, who had already played in the youth selection of the Gaues Schlesien , came to 22 appearances in the state selection of Mecklenburg, in which he a. a. also played with his Wismar teammate Fritz Laband . Just like the future world champion , he too received an offer from a club in the western zone . But for the sake of his wife Friedel, he decided not to work for Werder Bremen .

After the end of his career, Szewierski remained connected to football. In 1960 he led z. B. as a youth coach, the junior team of Motor Wismar for the state championship. From 1963 to 1973 he was team manager for TSG Wismar in the GDR league . In 1997 he took part in the founding event of FC Anker Wismar , whose sporting development he closely followed until his death in August 2005.
