At the end of the 1973/74 season, the attacker Weber - professionally he had completed his training as an industrial clerk - had drawn attention to himself from defending champion Frechen in the Mittelrhein association league as well as in the association selection. He was called “King “Schäfer brought to the FC amateur team in May / June 1974. For the 1974/75 season he, like Heinz-Theo Horst and Wolfgang Mattern, was accepted by manager Karl-Heinz Thielen into the billy goat elf's licensed players. Under coach Zlatko Čajkovski he was not used in the Bundesliga. Only in the second half of the 1975/76 season Weber came under Cajkovski's successor Georg Stollenwerk twice in the 1st Bundesliga and once in the UEFA Cup . He made his debut on March 6, 1976 in a 1: 2 away defeat at Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga. He formed the attack of the FC together with Dieter Müller and Johannes Löhr . He made his debut for FC as a professional in a competitive game on November 5, 1975 in the UEFA Cup at a home game against Spartak Moscow (0-1). Even in his second round in Duisburg, 1977/78, he could not change the ranking in the MSV attack: Seliger and Worm were set, but now the Berlin Norbert Stolzenburg stormed for the "zebras". For Weber 14 league appearances were noted and the MSV reached the nomination for the UEFA Cup of the season 1978/79 with the 6th place .

In his third season at MSV Duisburg, 1978/79, Weber became a regular player with 30 league appearances and three goals under coach Rolf Schafstall . In the league they fought for relegation, played a successful round in the UEFA Cup , which culminated in the semi-finals. Weber ran in ten games in the European Cup and scored two goals in the 4-0 home win on December 6, 1978 against Racing Strasbourg. In the semifinals, Duisburg failed to Mönchengladbach (2: 2, 1: 4).
