career

Wolfgang Mattern grew up in the Cologne-Kalk district on the right bank of the Rhine and joined Siegfriedia Kalk's youth department at the age of ten. After three years, the move to SC Borussia 05 Köln-Kalk followed, before the talent for the last A youth round, 1973/74, landed at Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln. Under coach Josef Röhrig , he and his teammates won the Middle Rhine Championship and also made it into the final of the German youth championship . The final lost Mattern with other players such as Gerd Strack , Hermann Knöppel and Hans-Juergen Tritschoks on June 9 in Stade with 0: 1 against the A-juniors of the 1. FC Nuremberg. Then he was accepted into the 1st amateur team of 1. FC Cologne.

Together with Hermann Knöppel , Rainer Nicot , Christoph Daum and Ralf Faber he formed the scaffolding of the FC amateurs under the coaches Gero Bisanz and Erich Rutemöller and was part of the permanent inventory of the selection of the Middle Rhine. The 1.89 m tall, sure-footed and above all strong goalkeeper won the championship in 1977 in the Mittelrhein Association League and in 1981 in the Oberliga Nordrhein . To top it off, he and teammates like Bernd Grabosch and Rüdiger Halbe brought the German amateur championship to Cologne on June 14, 1981 with a 2-0 win against FC St. Pauli . He helped out a total of three times with the professionals when there was a need in the gate: twice in the Bundesliga on October 9, 1974 against Hamburger SV (1: 3) and on November 15, 1975 against Eintracht Frankfurt (3: 3) , and on October 9, 1977 in the DFB Cup against Karlsruher SC (4-0). He was a reliable “standby goalkeeper” behind Toni Schumacher , his deputy Slobodan Topalović and later Gerald Ehrmann always ready when he was needed.

From 1987 to 1990 he ended his active career with the then top division club SC Viktoria Köln and then switched to the role of goalkeeping coach . From 1990 to 1994 he did this job at Bayer 04 Leverkusen with the B and A youth teams and then added a season at 1. FC Junkersdorf. From July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2014 Wolfgang Mattern was goalkeeping coach at FC Viktoria Köln .

Mattern, who is employed as a technician at WestLotto , lives in Rösrath in the Bergisch district .
