Günther Grüning

Günther Grüning (born November 26, 1904 in Wiesbaden ; † June 9, 1962 in Dresden ) was a German civil engineer and professor of structural engineering .

After graduating from high school in Hanover in 1924 , Grüning began studying civil engineering at the technical university there , which he graduated with a diploma in 1928. He then worked as a structural engineer and designer in Mannheim and Dortmund until 1931. He received his doctorate from the Technical University of Darmstadt in 1932 and began his scientific work at the Materials Testing Office in Berlin-Dahlem . In 1935 he completed his habilitation at the TH Berlin and in 1941 became senior government building officer in the Reich Aviation Ministry .

After the Second World War, he began in 1945 as a designer and site manager at VEB Stahl- und Walzwerk Riesa , where he was responsible for bridges, among other things. After further posts in Halle (Saale) and Leipzig , Grüning was appointed professor for technical mechanics and strength theory for civil engineers at the Technical University of Dresden in 1953 . He worked there until his death in June 1962.

Günther Grüning was the youngest son of the professor of statics Martin Grüning and Emilie von Schütz von Moßbach. His marriage to Lotte Lommatzsch had three children. He is buried in the Dresden-Coschütz cemetery.

At the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the “Günther Grüning Prize”, donated by the State Association of Testing Engineers for Structural Engineering in Saxony, has been awarded annually since 2000 for excellent projects and diploma theses.
