Günther Lottes

Günther Lottes (born February 7, 1951 in Altdorf ; † January 28, 2015 in Berlin ) was a German historian with a research focus on the cultural history of modern times.

Günther Lottes studied history, English and political science at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg from 1970 to 1973 . He then worked there until 1977 as a research assistant. In 1977 he received his doctorate with the study "Political Enlightenment and Plebeian Audiences" and worked until 1983 as a research assistant. In 1984 he completed his habilitation with the thesis “Enlightenment and conservative thinking. Studies on the early history of conservatism in France and England ” and was professor at the University of Regensburg from 1986 to 1993 . He then took up the position of professor for modern history (early modern times) at the University of Giessen , which he held until 1999. Until 2007 he was director of the European Enlightenment Research Center in Potsdam. He held the chair for modern cultural history at the University of Potsdam from 2008 until his death.
