Günther Regel (born March 28, 1926 in Maltsch ad Oder , Lower Silesia ) is a retired German professor for art education . He was the founder of a non-conformist art education in the GDR .

academic career

From 1946 on, Regel worked as a new teacher near Leipzig. In 1948 he began studying art education and psychology at the University of Leipzig , but after a short time he moved to Halle / Saale and finally to Greifswald . On his academic path, he was influenced by teachers such as Hans Mayer and Ernst Bloch in Leipzig, the art historian Wilhelm Worringer and the visual artist Conrad Felixmüller in Halle, and the Bauhaus student Herbert Wegehaupt in Greifswald. In 1956 he was awarded a PhD at the University of Greifswald with his dissertation "Investigations into the problem of realistic color design in art lessons". phil. PhD. In 1960 the habilitation followed there with the thesis "Investigation of the basic questions of colored design in art lessons at the general polytechnic high school."

Regel was in conflict with the culture and school policy of the GDR from an early age. His thoughts and theses on the concept of artistic education and the conveyance of the artistic did not correspond to the ideas of didactics and methodology of art teaching in the GDR. He led a life under repression and pressure, which led to a work ban from 1968 to 1970 and to a forced transfer to Leipzig in 1970.

From 1970 to 1975 Regel was a full professor of theory and methodology in art education at the Cultural Studies and German Studies Section of the Karl Marx University in Leipzig , and from 1975 to 1991 Professor of Theory and History of Fine Arts in the Cultural and Art Studies section of the Karl Marx University Leipzig. From 1970 to 1991 Regel built up a chair for the theory of fine arts and with his work had a lasting impact on the Leipzig Institute for Art Education .

In Leipzig, too, he had to fight reprisals because of his attitude. This led, among other things, to the ban on an international conference in Leipzig in 1977 - on the grounds of his lack of commitment to the cultural policy of the GDR. With "stubbornness", which Günther Regel attested to himself, he managed the balancing act between the state requirements and his art-historical needs without being dishonest or adjusted. Despite all the difficulties, he maintained international contacts, including with the art teacher Gunter Otto from West Germany. He described the relationship with Gunter Otto as unique for what was possible between the two Germanys in spite of all the arbitrariness and disabilities in contacts between specialist colleagues. Due to its clear demarcation from Otto's concept of "aesthetic education", it provoked a lasting and popular specialist dispute.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Regel made a significant contribution to the art-theoretical and art-pedagogical dialogue between East and West.

Art educational conception

The "specific artistic", "art-related teaching" and "artistic education" are essential for Regel for the development of creativity and creative ability of each individual in the sense of Joseph Beuys . Art education thus contributes significantly to the development of personality. The non-conformist concept of artistic education sees its communication focus in modern and contemporary art in the didactic unity of production, reception and reflection.
