Günther Steyrer (* 1931 in Spittal an der Drau ; † April 21, 1986 in Graz ) was a Carinthian school principal, dialect poet and composer.

Life

Günther Steyrer was born in 1931 as the oldest of three children and grew up in Villach-Lind . The apartment there was destroyed by an air raid, and the father did not return from captivity until 1952 . Like his father and grandfather, he too was to become a teacher and therefore, after graduating from high school in 1950, he graduated from the teacher training college in Klagenfurt. He received his first apprenticeship at the Asten elementary school located at 1700 meters above sea level, and in 1959 he switched to the Gschriet elementary school at 1100 meters . From 1973 until his early retirement due to a stroke in 1978, he was director of the Weissenstein elementary school . Günther Steyrer died on April 21, 1986 in a hospital in Graz . He was married twice and had three children from his first marriage.

During his time in Gschriet he began to write poetry in Carinthian dialect . From 1972 these were published in a total of 12 books, mainly by Klagenfurt Verlag Heyn . He often drew the inspiration for his often short but expressive poems directly from his everyday life as a country school teacher, nature and its changes. But religiosity also takes up a large space - atypical for a Protestant , he also composed praises of the Blessed Mother Mary . In addition, Steyrer, who could play several instruments, also worked as a choir director and composer. In 1966 he took over the management of the Feistritz / Drau singing community , and in 1973 also that of the AGV Weißenstein . Inspired by a Salzburg tradition, he composed the so-called Feistritzer Advent Singing together with Dieter Wiedergut in 1972 , which is still performed regularly.

On the occasion of his 80th birthday, the Tyrolis label released five CDs with Carinthian songs and texts by Günther Steyrer between 2008 and 2013. The municipality of Paternion honored him in a prominent place in the Feistritz district with a memorial plaque, and in Weißenstein a street is named after him.
