history

The Großglockner Hochalpenstraßen AG was founded on February 19, 1931 and has been 79 percent owned by the Republic of Austria since it was founded , the rest is divided between Salzburg and Carinthia, each with 10.5 percent .

The company employs between 40 and 100 people, depending on the season. The turnover in 2006 was 7.5 million euros. The chairman of the supervisory board is the deputy governor of Salzburg, Wilfried Haslauer junior ( ÖVP ). After 17 years as sole director and general director of GROHAG, Christian handed over Heu in 2011 to the current general director Johannes Hörl.

In the course of the corona crisis , Director Hörl declared on April 17, 2020 that decisions by other organs were required for the evacuation and opening of Großglocknerstrasse, which are not possible before May 20. "The supervisory board alone cannot allow the management board to open a part of the business if it is unlikely to be profitable." However, this is foreseeable if travel and exit restrictions remain in place and the 75% share of visitors from abroad can therefore be expected to fail.

Economic data and frequency of use

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road, one of the largest tourist attractions in Austria, is used by around 900,000 visitors annually (census from 2005). In 2007 there were 70,000 motorcycles on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road alone.

The Nockalmstrasse has an average annual frequency of 70,000 vehicles. In the period from 1995 to 2006, less than 5 million visitors generated revenue of 12.7 million euros. A census from 2005 shows 220,000 visitors.
