A lift truck is a floor conveyor with or without an electric drive. It can be used to transport transport pallets , lattice boxes and corresponding conveying aids on a level surface. Another name that is used more colloquially is Ameise , a brand of the Jungheinrich company .

functionality

A pallet truck has two metal prongs (fork) that can be pushed under the pallet. In the front under the tines there are small, downwardly extendable load rollers, on the other side there are one or two steerable rollers. The lifting tines can be adjusted in height parallel to the ground using the load and swivel castors with a hydraulic lifting cylinder and a linkage; this allows the pallet to be lifted for shipping. The handle is used for moving and steering and, in the case of non-powered devices, as a lever for a hydraulic pump that feeds the lifting cylinder. The control option for the hydraulic valve (lifting / driving / lowering) is located on the handle or near the steering axle. Electric pallet trucks follow the operator with additional control handles.

Pallet trucks equipped with load cells also serve as mobile scales .

Differentiation from forklifts

Pallet trucks differ from forklifts mainly in that the center of gravity of the load lies within the vehicle contour and thus the counterweight required for forklifts is not required. The operator usually walks alongside or stands on a platform attached to the pallet truck while sitting at the forklift. However, there are also electric pallet trucks in which the driver is seated and controls it like a forklift. Pallet trucks are more compact, lighter and more manoeuvrable than forklifts. Hand pallet trucks without a motor are also used on the loading area of trucks . In conjunction with a tail lift (= tail lift), you can move cargo from the loading area to the ground.

Loading height

Pallet trucks only allow the pallets to be moved at ground level, while these can also be lifted onto shelves or other elevated surfaces with high-lift trucks ; also on other pallets with the help of double-decker trucks.

Hand pallet truck function

A long lever handle (drawbar) is used to pull, steer and lift the entire lift truck using a hydraulic cylinder . The hydraulic pump is driven by moving the lever up and down and the fork attachment is raised with the hydraulic cylinder. This movement is deflected around an axis above the fork prongs, so that two push rods are pushed forward in the fork prongs, which fold the front rollers downwards via a further deflection.

A lever with a cable pull on the handle of the pallet truck is usually used for lowering. Hand pallet trucks are comparatively light (less than 100 kg). The load can be pulled or pushed. The load capacities range from 2.0 t (for standard devices) up to max. 10 t for manual devices. The standard length is 1150 mm for Euro pallets or 800 mm when entering the pallet from the side. The pallet truck is only intended for storing or relocating pallets and not for transporting people.

Electric pallet truck

Electrically operated pallet trucks, some with standing room , reduce the effort required by the operator and at the same time can transport higher payloads. The electrical operation supports the journey or the lifting of the load or both.

safety

  • In Germany, an annual UVV test (according to the guidelines of the employers' liability insurance association) is mandatory for an electric pallet truck.
  • A certificate of competence (driver's license) to drive electric pallet trucks is not required if the pallet truck is controlled by a driver, also known as a pedestrian. In this case, in accordance with the employer's liability insurance association regulation, Section 7 (2) BGV D27, it is sufficient to instruct the driver in the handling of the pallet truck. In this case, the driver does not have to be instructed in writing.

A low-floor pallet truck is a pallet truck with flat forks, with which loads can be picked up almost at floor level (from an entrance height of 35 mm). This enables the in-house transport of loads (especially from Asia) that are not delivered on standardized euro pallets. In addition, trucks with a loading device that can be lowered and raised are also referred to as low-floor lift trucks.
