Riechheim is a district of Elleben in the Ilm district ( Thuringia ) with 595 inhabitants.

geography

Riechheim is located on the southern edge of the Thuringian Basin at a height of about 400 meters on the western slope of the 513 meter high Riechheimer Berg . The Riechheimer Berg is the highest point in the area. The administration community Riechheimer Berg is named after him. The area around Riechheim is used by many Erfurt residents as an excursion and recreation area. In the 1990s, three residential areas were created in Riechheim. By far the largest is located on the southwest slope of the Riechheimer Berg. This increased the population from around 180 to around 600. Today, Riechheim is the largest district in the Elleben community.

history

Finds of flint gardens on the Riechheimer Berg are evidence of an early settlement around the dominant mountain in the foreland of the Thuringian Forest. It can be assumed that there was a Neolithic hill settlement on it .

Riechheim probably originated from a break at a spring. The place was first mentioned in 1379. The Thirty Years War raged heavily in Riechheim .

The St. Gallus Church was destroyed in 1646 in a fire in the village caused by warbands. Warriors were also billeted in the church . Today's church in the village dates from 1647. It received a new organ in 1747 from the workshop of the Wandersleben organ builder Johann Stephan Schmaltz .

Today a choir with 20 women and nine men rehearses chants in the parish hall of the church.

Until 1920 Riechheim belonged to the office of Kranichfeld in the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen . Then the village became part of the Weimar district , from 1952 it belonged to the Arnstadt district in the Erfurt district . This circle merged in 1994 in the Ilm district, to which Riechheim belongs today. The Evangelical Lutheran parish of Riechheim is part of the Elxleben parish . On January 24, 1974 the place was incorporated into the municipality of Elleben.

Economy and Transport

Riechheim is characterized by agriculture. Most of the residents, however, are commuters who mostly work in Erfurt and Arnstadt . There are three restaurants, including the Gasthaus Riechheimer Berg and the country inn in town. A few farms are still operated in the original village area, but only one is full-time. There is also a small garage.

Public roads lead from Riechheim to Hohenfelden , Gügleben and a poorly navigable road to Schellroda.

Village life is determined by diverse traditions. Every year the Christmas tree burning, a children's festival with a solstice celebration, and a potato fire take place. Leisure and cultural offers can be used. There is a dance group "Riechheimer Bergwirbel", a youth library, a knitting room and the volunteer fire brigade association for children, young people and adults.
