Gabriel Moïse Charpentier (born September 13, 1925 in Richmond , Québec ) is a Canadian composer and poet.

Life

Charpentier first took piano lessons in his hometown with Estelle Letarte , then in Trois-Rivières with Joseph-Antonio Thompson and finally from 1940 to 1945 at Jean-de-Brébeuf College in Montreal with Hervé Cloutier and Fernand Graton and with Jean Papineau-Couture . Until 1947 he studied Gregorian singing with Dom Bergeron in the Benedictine monastery of St-Benoît-du-Lac ; until 1953 he finally studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger (composition), Annette Dieudonné ( Solfège ), Andrée Bonneville and Norbert Dufourcq .

From 1954 to 1980 Charpentier was program coordinator and artistic advisor for music programs on the French television program of the CBC . In collaboration with Françoys Bernier , Pierre Mercure , Pierre Morin and others, he produced series such as Concerts pour la jeunesse , L'Heure du concert , Musiques folles des années sages , and Les Beaux Dimanches . In 1955 and 1956 Charpentier gave summer courses in music history at McGill University . From 1961 to 1964 he taught music history and rhythm at the National Theater School . From 1959 to 1972 he was musical director of the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde . He composed vocal and instrumental music, but was best known for his operas, drama and film scores. In total, he created more than sixty works for music theater.

In 1948 Charpentier received the Prix ​​de la poésie modern in Paris for his poetry collection Aire . He wrote the texts for Pierre Mercures Cantate pour une joie and Dissidence and for Jocelyne Binet's Trois Poèmes and translated R. Murray Schafer's operas Loving and Beauty and the Beast .
