Gabriel François Doyen (born May 20, 1726 in Paris , † June 5, 1806 in Saint Petersburg ) was a French painter .

Gabriel Francois Doyen was a student of Carle van Loo and trained in Rome from 1748 . In Rome he studied the works of Annibale Carracci , Pietro da Cortona , Giulio Romano and Michelangelo . He also visited other cities such as Naples , Venice and Bologna .

In 1755 he returned to Paris and in 1777 he became court painter to the Count of Artois and teacher at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris.

When the French Revolution broke out , Doyen accepted an offer from Catherine II of Russia and traveled to Saint Petersburg, where he became director of the academy in 1791. Effective coloring and correct drawing, especially shortened forms, are the advantages of his paintings .
