Life

Roth grew up in Riverside, California . His parents were both lawyers. He graduated from New York University .

Shortly before his graduation, Roth founded the record label Desco Records with Philippe Lehman in 1996 , which dedicated itself to the revival of soul and funk . Desco's artists included The Sugarman Three by saxophonist Neal Sugarman , the Daktaris, forerunners of Antibalas, the Mighty Imperials, Sharon Jones , Lee Fields and Naomi Shelton. Desco's house band were the Soul Providers, whose band leader and bass player was Roth.

When Desco broke up because of internal disagreements in 2000, Roth took a job at Sony Records to pay off his debts. In 2001 he started his own business again. With Neal Sugarman he founded Daptone Records . The first releases of the new label were the debut album by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, recorded in Barcelona in 2001, and the third album by Sugarman Three.

They rented a house in Bushwick, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Brooklyn , which they renovated themselves with their musicians. Soul-style recordings were made in her analog studio in the 1960s and early 1970s. Daptones house band, the Dap-Kings, had emerged from the Soul Providers, and Roth was still the band leader, bassist and main composer.

The increasing success of Sharon Jones made the music world aware of the Dap-Kings. Kanye West sampled Pick It Up, Lay It In the Cut by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings for the rapper Rhymefest's song Brand New . The Dap-Kings were involved in the soundtrack of the film American Gangster (2007). And Mark Ronson engaged them to record the album Back to Black by Amy Winehouse , with which they then also appeared in the United States. For this collaboration, Roth won a Grammy as a sound engineer and a platinum record .

Roth won his second Grammy for The Road from Memphis by Booker T. Jones (2011), again as a sound engineer.
