Neal Sugarman

Neal Sugarman is an American saxophonist , band leader , songwriter and label owner .

biography

In the early 1980s was Sugarman member of the High School - punk band "Boys Life", in Boston was quite known and environment. After high school, he studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He played at jazz concerts and tried to gain a foothold in New York in 1991 . After a stay in New Orleans , he returned to New York in 1996.

It was in New Orleans that he discovered his love for R&B and soul . With the drummer Rudy Albin, the organist Adam Scope and the guitarist Coleman Mellett he founded the Sugarman 3 . With Desco Records they released the albums Sugar's Boogaloo (1998) and Soul Donkey (2000). They performed in England, France and Italy. While working on the third album, Desco Records ended.

In 2001 Sugarmann founded the label Daptone Records together with Gabriel Roth , formerly one of the operators of Desco, where the third Sugarman 3 album Pure Cane Sugar was released in 2002. Sugarman was now a co-operator of Daptone and became a member of the Daptone house band Dap-Kings. In addition to the recordings produced by Daptone, the Dap-Kings also played for other artists, for example on the albums Back to Black by Amy Winehouse (2006), Version by Mark Ronson (2007), Lay It Down by Al Green (2008) and Crazy Love by Michael Bublé (2009).

In 2011, Sugarman was invited by Steve Cropper to take part in the recording of the album Dedicated: A Tribute to the 5 Royales . In 2012 the fourth album of Sugarman 3, What the World Needs Now was released . This time Gabriel Roth was on the bass part.
