Gabriel Strobl

Gabriel Strobl (born November 3, 1846 in Unzmarkt , Styria , † March 15, 1925 in Admont Abbey ) was a k. k. and k. u. k. Austrian priest, botanist and entomologist .

Life

Gabriel Strobl grew up with his aunt in Rottenmann after the death of his mother . In 1866, at the age of 20, he became a priest at the Admont Benedictine monastery . A devastating fire in 1865 fell victim to the natural history cabinet of the monastery, which had included Joseph Stammel's universe . Abbot Karlmann Hieber (term of office 1861–1868) entrusted him with the reconstruction of the natural history museum. In 44 years of work - up to a stroke in 1910 - Gabriel Strobl built a new collection. He devoted the first 12 years of his work mainly to botany before devoting himself entirely to entomology for 32 years. Even though his published work mainly deals with the two-winged species (diptera, i.e. flies and mosquitoes), he also worked on hymenoptera and beetles of the Balkan peninsula (which until 1918 partly belonged to Austria-Hungary ) .
