Gabriel von der Lieth (also von der Lith ; * 1692 ; † May 1, 1766 in Hamburg ) was an electoral Saxon (royal Polish) diplomat .

Life

Gabriel von der Lieth was related to the Saxon privy councilor Albrecht von der Lieth (1659-1718). He initially served as a secret chancellery, then from 1723 as legation secretary at the Saxon legation in Munich , at that time under the envoy Count von Wackerbarth-Salmour . From 1727 to 1730 he took over the management of the mission at the Bavarian court of Charles I as a charge d'affaires .

As early as 1726 he applied for the position of resident at the Hanseatic cities in Hamburg . He was finally transferred there in 1730 after his predecessor, the writer Peter Ambrosius Lehmann (1663-1729) died on October 31, 1729. Interrupted by a brief mission to Copenhagen , Lieth remained the Saxon envoy in Hamburg until the end of his life. From 1732 Legation Councilor, he also became resident in Lübeck in 1763 . During the mission to Denmark on behalf of the envoy Helmuth von Plessen (1699–1761), he was represented at the Hanseatic cities by the Hamburg merchant Samuel Trugard.

In the spring of 1751 von der Lieth reported to Friedrich August II. About Huguenots who had fled the Languedoc to Hamburg without any successful recruitment. He reported to both the royal court in Warsaw and the electoral court in Dresden ; both correspondence was intercepted by the Prussian secret service. Von der Lith died in office at the age of 74 on May 1, 1766.
