Gabriele Neumann (born July 29, 1963 in Hagen ) is a German sports psychologist and former basketball player .

Life

From 1984 to 1987 Neumann played for the University of Oregon women's basketball team while studying psychology at college in the United States . In all three seasons the center player led the "ducks" in the statistical category "rebounds per game" and in 1984/85 and 1985/86 also in "blocks per game". In total, Neumann made 84 appearances in the NCAA , in which she averaged 13.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per encounter. For years she played in the women's basketball league , with DJK Agon 08 Düsseldorf she was also represented in the European Cup. Neumann played 84 senior international matches for Germany between June 1981 and December 1989. In 1983 she took part with the German selection at the European Championships in Hungary and was the third-best German scorer in the tournament with an average of ten points per game.

Neumann worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Sports Games at the German Sport University Cologne . In 1992 her doctoral thesis (title: "On career development in basketball - an empirical study on selected socialization, interaction and motivational aspects of female basketball players") was accepted at the sports university. In 2001 she moved to the Federal Institute for Sports Science (BISp) and took up the position of head of the psychology department. In 2003, she presented at the Ruhr-University Bochum their Habilitation (Title: "Basketball Fundamentals training") before and became the instructor in professional sports psychology . At the BISp, Neumann rose from scientific counselor to scientific director in 2005. From 2014 to September 2015, Neumann was also responsible for managing the “Scientific Advice” department at the Federal Institute for Sports Science. According to the assessment of Bernd Strauss in 2016 on the occasion of the award of honorary membership to Neumann by the Working Group for Sport Psychology in Germany , it can be classified as "one of the important engines of this millennium for the very positive development of applied sport psychology in Germany".
