Gabrio Piola
Gabrio Piola (* 1794 in Milan , † 1850 in Giussano ( Province of Monza )) was an Italian mathematician and physicist . Piola comes from a family of Milanese patricians from Giussano . He studied mathematics at the University of Pavia and received his doctorate in 1816. His teacher was Vincenzo Brunacci . He was offered the chair of applied mathematics in Rome, but he preferred to teach privately. Francesco Brioschi is one of his students . He dealt with mechanics on the occasion of a competition of the Istituto Lombardo in Milan, for which he wrote an essay on the mechanics of Lagrange. In mathematics, he dealt with the calculus of variations and the finite difference method .
He is known for contributions to continuum mechanics and elasticity theory . The Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor is named after him and Gustav Robert Kirchhoff .
Honors
A square in Milan is named after him. In addition, a stop on the Milan subway on line 2 is named after him: Piola MM . His marble statue (created by Vincenzo Vela in 1857) stands in the courtyard of the Palazzo di Brera in Milan.
