Oswald Gabelkover

Oswald Gabelkover (born September 3, 1539 in Memmingen , † December 31, 1616 in Stuttgart ) was a doctor , heraldist and historian .

Life

Gabelkover comes from the Bavarian-Austrian noble family Gabelkofen , his father was a doctor in Memmingen . After studying medicine in Tübingen and Bologna, he was hired in 1563 by the Duke of Württemberg as a country doctor based in Göppingen . In 1580 the new Duke Ludwig called him to Stuttgart as a personal physician . Here he also worked as a librarian and historian.

Gabelkover's account of Württemberg history remained unfinished. Manuscripts from it are in the main state archive in Stuttgart (holdings J 1) and in the Württemberg State Library . The work was written out in the printed New Wirtenberg Chronicle by Johann Ulrich Steinhofer .

His story of the Counts of Helfenstein also remained in manuscript . Gabelkover brought together a huge number of excerpts from sources in his Collectaneen (mostly in the archive, partly in the State Library). Many of the documents or inscriptions that he briefly summarized are no longer available today. He maintained correspondence with Johann Jakob Rüeger, among others .

Gabelkover was a collaborator on Siebmacher 's coat of arms book from 1605.
