Gaetano Esposito (born November 17, 1858 in Salerno , † April 8, 1911 in Sala Consilina ) was an Italian genre painter , fresco artist and sculptor who worked in Paris .

Esposito received his first drawing lessons from the painter Gaetano D'Agostino . He studied painting for five years at the Accademia di belle arti di Napoli with Domenico Morelli and Filippo Palizzi, and sculpture with Stanislao Lista . His classmates included u. a. Giuseppe Avallone , Vincenzo Migliaro , Vincenzo Caprile , Giuseppe De Sanctis , Paolo Vetri and Vincenzo Volpe .

After graduating, he devoted himself to genre, history and landscape painting . From 1875 he took part in many art exhibitions: In Rome 1883, Turin 1884, Milan 1894, Venice 1895, Rome 1896, Florence 1897, Saint Petersburg 1902, London 1904 and Milan 1906. Many of his works brought him awards and medals.

He was influenced by 17th century Neapolitan painting, in particular by Jusepe de Ribera .

Around the turn of the 1900s, Gaetano Esposito devoted himself to decorative paintings such as the frescoes of Caffè Gambrinus, the Chamber of Commerce of Naples and the decoration of the ceiling of the Teatro Garibaldi in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, where he painted the apotheosis of poetry.

In 1910, his young student, Venturina Castrignani, took her own life after Gaetano Esposito failed to reciprocate her feelings. Plagued by guilt, Esposito died of suicide at the age of 53 .
