Gagetown is a village in the Canadian province of New Brunswick and the administrative seat ( shire town ) of Queens County . The population in 2011 was 698 people.

Gagetown is near the southern tip of Grand Lake . New Brunswick's provincial capital, Fredericton, is around 50 kilometers to the northwest . The Saint John River flows on the northern edge of Gagetown . The New Brunswick Route 2 touches the place in the north.

history

Thomas Gage

The native inhabitants of the area were the Maliseet Indians . Mid- 18th century to let Acadians settled there and called the place Grimross , but were of British units during the Seven Years' War in North America driven out. As a result, the town was in honor of the British General Thomas Gage in Gagetown renamed. The official establishment of the Village of Gagetown took place in 1966.

The livelihood of the inhabitants was initially agriculture. With the opening of the St. John and Québec Railway , the place experienced a strong boom. Built in 1910, Tilley House was listed on the National Historic Sites of Canada in New Brunswick and is now administered by the Queens County Museum . In the meantime, Gagetown has developed into a center for artists and artisans. Tourist offers such as bird watching , trekking tours and various water sports activities are also becoming increasingly important.

An important employer for the place is the CFB Gagetown military base of the Canadian Army to the west .
