Gaius Longinius Speratus (* 2nd century ; † 3rd century ) was a Roman brick manufacturer.

Life

Gaius Longinius Speratus served in the Legio XXII Primigenia , which was stationed in Mogontiacum ( Mainz ), and settled as a veteran near what is now Großbottwar . He manufactured bricks on the site of his villa rustica , which he sold in a sales area of ​​around 10 × 20 kilometers. Bricks with Speratus' stamp “GLSP” were found in Weinsberg and Walheim , for example .

He had four children with his wife, Iunia Deva. The names of the family members come from the dedicatory inscription of a sanctuary for Apollo and Sirona , which Longinius Speratus and his family had built on their own property in 201 AD. The 142 centimeter wide, 82 centimeter high and 16 centimeter thick sandstone slab was found in Großbottwar in 1710. She had been in Stuttgart since 1757 at the latest. Now it is in the lapidarium of the Württemberg State Museum . It contains the following inscription:
