The Galena River (also known as Rivière aux Fèves , Fevre or Fever River ) is a 84.3 km long left tributary of the Mississippi in the Midwest of the United States .
geography
The river rises north of Benton in Lafayette County in Wisconsin , flows through Lafayette County to then reach Jo Daviess County in Illinois further south . There it flows through the city of the same name Galena and flows about 2 km southwest into the upper reaches of the Mississippi.
The river flows through what is known as the Driftless Area , an ice-age shaped plateau that stretches across southeastern Minnesota , southwestern Wisconsin, northeastern Iowa, and far northwestern Illinois. During the last ice age, the so-called Wisconsin Glaciation , the region remained ice-free, so that the river valley of the Galena River was able to cut deeper into the plateau during this time.
history
The river was first known as "Rivière aux Fèves" and "Bean River" because of the wild beans that are common on its banks. The corruption of the French name also gave rise to the name "Fever River" for the river.
The 1827 war against the Winnebago was also known as the "Fevre River War" and named after the river.
