The Bredelem gallery grave belongs to the Neolithic type, which is also known as the Hessian-Westphalian stone box and, here and in parts of Westphalia, belongs to the funnel cup culture (TBK).

location

The approximately 5000 year old Neolithic megalithic complex is located between Bredelem and Langelsheim on the left bank of the Innerste in the Goslar district in Lower Saxony , roughly where the river reaches the L 515 state road . It is one of the six gallery graves in Lower Saxony and was discovered while plowing in 1959, dug up by Alfred Tode in the same year and rebuilt 200 meters apart.

description

The chamber, built from large sandstones , is almost 14.5 meters long and 1.6 to 1.7 meters wide. The stones on the long sides are no longer complete, because seven are missing. The end stone on the southwest side was found in situ . The access to the chamber was carried out over a short, ante-like entrance hall, which is recognizable by the engaged door stone at the northeast end. The floor was paved with pebbles . Depressions in the ground transverse to the longitudinal direction of the burial chamber are interpreted by Tode as traces of previously existing dividing stones. There is no indication of the type of ceiling construction. A 17 centimeter long chisel that resembles the outline of a foot can be seen on the outside of one of the side bearing stones. Such signs are known to prehistoric science.

Despite a disturbance, the excavation revealed the skeletal parts of at least 51 individuals. Other finds were poorly identifiable ceramic shards, stone tools, animal tooth pendants and animal bones as well as fireplaces.
