Gambia Biometric Identification System

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gambia Biometric Identification System (GAMBIS) is a project in the West African state of Gambia , which claims to be the world's first integrated biometric identity management system.

Through this system, the Gambian government collects biometric data of all of its citizens living in the country and foreigners permanently or temporarily resident in the country. The cards are issued to adults ( in Gambia from 18 ). The GAMBIS cards have been issued since July 23, 2009 at eight stations in five locations in the country.

By March 2010, more than 100,000 GAMBIS cards had been issued. And in mid-2012, more than 300,000 cards were issued.
