The silted up church, formerly the parish church of Gammel Skagen |
Gammel Skagen (dt. Old Skagen ), also called Højen , is a place in the Frederikshavn municipality in the Danish region of Nordjylland .
The place is known for its small yellow houses with red roofs in a dune landscape directly on the North Sea . The town of Skagen , which lies northeast of Gammel Skagen , later emerged from the place. The former church of Gammel Skagen is located southeast of the village, but had to be abandoned due to numerous sandstorms. It became known as the Silted Church . The over 1 km² large shifting dune Råbjerg Mile is located south of the village.
Due to the numerous natural phenomena and the picturesque houses, painters such as Michael Ancher , Christian Krohg , Marie Krøyer and Peder Severin Krøyer often settled in the village . Gammel Skagen is today heavily influenced by tourism. There are holiday home areas around the village and there are numerous hotels in the village itself.
