Gardenian was a Swedish melodic death metal band from Gothenburg , which was founded in 1996, disbanded in 2004 and reunited in 2013 and disbanded again in 2016.
history
Gardenian was founded in April 1996 by drummer Thim Blom and singer / guitarist Jim Kjell. Then guitarist Niclas Engelin and bassist Håkan Skoger also joined the band. Later in 1996, the band recorded the first demo and sent it to Listenable Records , which eventually allowed the band to get a deal. The studio Fredman was booked in the same year so that the band could record their first studio album.
In 1997 Gardenian released the debut album Two Feet Stand . After the release, the band was hardly active due to the lack of interest from the Listenable Records label. At this point Niklas Engelin decided to join the band In Flames to go on tour with them. Due to the lack of interest of the label, the band decided to break off contact with Listenable Records so that the band could now decide for themselves. However, bassist Håkan Skoger didn't feel ready for this, so he concentrated more on his other project, headplate .
A short time later the band signed a contract with Nuclear Blast . In 1999 Gardenian recorded the second album called Soulburner , which was recorded again at Studio Fredman. On this album Eric Hawk (ex- Artch ) and Sabrina Khilstrand (ex- Ice Age ) could be heard as guest vocalists. After Soulburner was released, Gardenian toured with bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquility , Children of Bodom , Hypocrisy , The Kovenant and Evereve .
In 2000 the band recorded the third studio album, Sindustries . The album was recorded in Abyss Studio and produced by Peter Tägegren . Shortly after the release of Sindustries , Gardenian felt disappointed by the bad treatment from Nuclear Blast, so the band split from the label. In 2003 the line-up of the band changed a lot, so that the band broke up in 2004.
After the band performed at the Gothenburg Sound Festival in January 2013, the members decided to make music together again. The band also stated that they were already working on new songs. However, it is unknown when the recordings will start and what the new album will sound like. In 2016 the band announced that due to lack of interest, a new album will probably never be released. The band was pronounced dead:
"Well guys. As you all have noticed, not much is going on. Due to lack of intrest a new Gardenian album seems pretty far away. A whole bunch of songs where written but we guys Gardenian was not meant to be. It's with a heavy heart we deliver this news to you. But as it is, it is unlikely there will ever be a new album from us.
We are sorry but as of now Gardenian is dead and gone! "
style
Gardenian play classic Melodic Death Metal and are compared to other bands in this genre like At the Gates . Another characteristic is the high playing speed, which alternates with slower passages. In the course of the band's history, the sound of the band has changed slightly. In later works you can hear more and more clear vocals, instead of the growls used at the beginning and the later works also sound less aggressive.
