Life

Morgen received his early school education at Grammar School in Bridgend , Wales, and then attended the London School of Economics and Political Science , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Economics . He then worked as an accountant in the UK administration and became a registered member of a professional body in 1968, comparable to an accountant .

He moved to the University of Texas at Austin , where he graduated with a Masters in Public Administration in 1970 . As part of his studies, he completed a few learning units in organizational theory ( " organizational studies " ), whereby he questioned some of the assumptions and assumptions underlying the accounting profession. He pursued his thoughts as a lecturer at the University of Lancaster and gained 1980 his doctorate (Ph.D.) in Organization Studies , bringing his career as an author , speaker and business consultant began.

In the 1980s he became a faculty member of the School of Business at Pennsylvania State University . From there he moved to York University in Toronto. In the 1990s, his book Images of Organization became a worldwide bestseller and was translated into sixteen languages (Eng. Bilder der Organization , Klett, 1999).

In the late 1990s, Morgan turned to reinventing the doctrine of organization and management through the development of Internet technology. That led to the formation of NewMindsets Inc. in 2000, and its activities focused on internet entrepreneurship and research for its product.

He worked in the editorial offices of various specialist journals, including renowned papers such as Action Learning , Administration & Society , Organization , the Journal of Management and Organization Studies .

Morgan tried to integrate theory and practice throughout his career. He wrote for both academic and practical target groups and firmly advocated the concept of action learning in research. The questioning of assumptions can be seen as a common thread in his work - to offer help with which new thinking is developed in the social sciences, organizational and management theory and practice and, implicitly, in daily life.

Morgan's best-known books are Sociological Paradigms and Organizational Analysis, written with Gibson Burrell, and Beyond Method: Strategies for Social Research .

Sociological Paradigms and Organizational Analysis

The work by Gibson Burrell and Gareth Morgan, first published in 1979, is considered a classic of organizational theory. It builds on Thomas S. Kuhn's concept of the paradigm , examines the hidden assumptions of social and organizational theories and presents a map-like representation of dozens of different schools of thought. The key message is that the various theories reflect very different implicit assumptions about the nature of social reality. This map reflects the paradigms of the “functionalists”, the “interpreters”, “radical humanists” and “radical structuralists” and how their assumptions and assumptions influence our perception and the way in which we view organizations. Morgan revisited the subject in the influential article The Case for Qualitative Research (1980), co- authored with Linda Smircich .

Since the publication of this work, this approach has been used by various scientists in a wide range of topics in order to challenge the fundamental theories of their respective fields and thus influence their work.

Images of Organization

In Images of Organization , Morgan challenges the reader's understanding to think of organizations as one of eight possible categories. These categories are tools Morgan uses to challenge the perception of the organization. There are the pictures of the organization as:

  • a machine
  • an organism
  • a brain
  • a culture
  • a political system
  • a mental prison
  • Flow and change
  • Instrument of power.

Today, these images are often understood as metaphors . And although the images clearly contradict each other in terms of content, they can still be applied to the same organization and used to solve problems. They are also not an exhaustive description of the organization, but a generalized approach to the characteristic features of the organizations. Morgan delves into the subject in his book New Mindsets for Seeing, Thinking and Managing .
