Gareth Wyn Roberts (born February 6, 1978 in Wrexham ) is a Welsh football player who has been under contract with the English third division club Notts County since 2014 . Between 2000 and 2005, he played ten caps for the Welsh national team .

Career

Tranmere Rovers

Gareth Roberts, who came from the youth academy of Liverpool FC , joined the Greek first division team Panionios Athens , coached by Ronnie Whelan , in January 1999 and played fifteen league games and two games in the 1998/99 European Cup , before joining the English second division team on August 13, 1999 on loan Tranmere Rovers switched. After his good debut in Birkenhead , the club signed him on November 8, 1999 on a permanent contract basis. In the 1999/2000 League Cup , Roberts and his team surprisingly reached the final, but lost this game in front of 74,313 spectators at Wembley with 1: 2 against Leicester City . 2000/01 , the club rose from bottom of the table in the third division. In the Football League One 2004/05 Tranmere reached the play-offs as third in the table, but failed prematurely at Hartlepool United .

Doncaster Rovers

On May 19, 2006 Gareth Roberts moved to league rivals Doncaster Rovers . In his first season he won the Football League Trophy with Doncaster by a 3-2 after extra time in the final against the Bristol Rovers . Roberts was not used in this game by coach Sean O'Driscoll . In the Football League One 2007/08 , the club moved into the play-offs as third in the table and reached the final after a first-round success over Southend United . In front of 75,132 spectators at Wembley, Doncaster defeated Leeds United 1-0 and thus achieved promotion to the Football League Championship . After relegation in the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons Roberts decided against a contract extension in Doncaster and left the club after four years.

Derby County

On May 13, 2010, the second division Derby County announced the commitment of Gareth Roberts. In the following two seasons, the left-back established himself in his new team and signed a new one-year contract in April 2012.

Bury FC and Notts County

After a temporary move to fourth division FC Bury , Roberts signed a contract with third division Notts County on January 31, 2014 until the end of the season .
