Vegetative characteristics

The Gargano-Purgierdolde is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 250 centimeters. The above-ground parts of the plant are more or less bare. They are considered poisonous to some mammals. The alternate arranged on the stem leaves are two to four times feathery whorled part. The narrow leaf sections are linear with a length of 1 to 6 centimeters, rolled over at the edge, with entire margins or with one or two teeth.

Generative characteristics

The yellow, double-gold inflorescence is made up of 5 to 30 rays and cobs and usually has no shell or sheath.

The fruits are flat elliptical with a length of 12 to 30 millimeters, with 3 to 7 millimeters wide, deeply indented wings above and below.

The flowering period extends from April to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

Thapsia garganica occurs in the Mediterranean region of Tunisia , northern Algeria , northwestern Libya , the Balearic Islands , Sardinia , Sicily , Italy , Greece , Crete and in the western part of European and Asian Turkey . Thapsia garganica thrives on dry pastures, in olive groves and along roadsides.

Systematics

The first publication of Thapsia garganica was in 1767 by Carl von Linné in Mantissa Plantarum. Generum Editionis vi et Specierum Editionis II , page 57.

Some authors have about two subspecies:

  • Thapsia garganica L. subsp. garganica : It occurs in Ibiza , Sardinia, Italy, Sicily and Greece.
  • Thapsia garganica subsp. messanensis (cast.) Brullo, Guglielmo, Pasta, Pavone & Salmeri : This endemic occurs only in Sicily.
