Garrett Putnam Serviss (born March 24, 1851 in Sharon Springs , New York , † 1929 ) was an American journalist and author. He wrote non -fiction books on astronomical subjects and science fiction stories.

Life

Serviss was born in Sharon Springs, New York in 1851. From 1868 to 1872 he studied science at Cornell University . He then attended Columbia College Law School. However, he never worked as a lawyer, but became editor of the New York Sun in 1876 , where he popularized scientific topics in numerous articles. From 1892 he devoted himself entirely to this task as a lecturer and author.

His first book "Astronomy with an Opera Glass" was published in 1888. Although most of his books deal with questions of astronomy , he also wrote an introduction to the theory of relativity and a guide to the "art of public speaking". Measured against the output of non-fiction books and magazine articles, future literature only takes up a small part of his work. Five novels and one short story are known. Similar to HG Wells , Jules Verne or Kurd Laßwitz , Serviss placed great emphasis on conveying scientific relationships in his fictional stories.
