The Garden Montbretia ( Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora ) is a plant of the genus Crocosmia ( Crocosmia ) in the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae). It is a hybrid of the gold montbretia ( Crocosmia aurea ) and the Potts-montbretia ( Crocosmia pottsii ) that emerged in culture .

features

The garden montbretia is a perennial tuber that reaches heights of 30 to 90 centimeters. The stem has 2 to 3 ribs. The 4 to 8 leaves reach a length of 30 to 50 centimeters and a width of 0.8 to 2 in rare cases even 3 centimeters. The Perigonzipfel are not widely spread and 15 to 25 millimeters long. Style and stamens are as long as the Perigonzipfel. The perigon tube has a length of 10 to 15 millimeters. The flowers are arranged in two-row spikes and 3 to 5 side spikes, a smaller number of side spikes is rare, very rarely they are completely absent. They are yellow-orange to red in color. The species is sterile and reproduces vegetatively through the formation of daughter tubers.

Flowering time is from July to October.

Occurrence

Overgrown deposits of the garden montbretia can be found in Europe in Portugal, France, Ireland and Great Britain. It is also found as a neophyte in other countries in Africa, Asia and America. The home is South Africa.

The garden montbretia is widely used as an ornamental plant in borders and perennial beds and as a cut flower. It has been in culture since 1880 at the latest. There are numerous varieties with red, orange or yellow flowers, and spots can also be found at the base of the tepals.
