Gary Felsenfeld
Gary Felsenfeld (* 1929 in New York City ) is an American molecular biologist .
Life
Felsenfeld graduated after attending Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan in 1947 to study in the subjects of Biology and Physical Chemistry at Harvard University and the California Institute of Technology (CALTECH) before he, with the support of a scholarship of the National Science Foundation , a post-graduate studies at the University of Oxford .
Upon completion of his studies, he became head of the physical chemistry department of the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the National Institute for Digestive and Kidney Diseases , one of the facilities of the National Institutes of Health , in Washington, DC in 1961
He was particularly interested in the association of regulatory protein molecules with chromatin , using DNA footprinting to investigate the exact position on the DNA and the interaction between the protein molecules that regulate the expression of the globin genes . Howard Cedar and later Alan Wolffe were among his research assistants between 1971 and 1973 .
In 1976 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and in 1981 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He has been a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 1980 .
