Gary Puckett & The Union Gap was an American pop band that had a number of hits in the 1960s. The group's most successful track was the song Young Girl from 1968.
Career
The band was founded in 1967 in San Diego by Gary Puckett. Union Gap is the name of a city in Washington State that was originally called Yakima , but was renamed in 1918 in memory of the Civil War. The city is not identical to today's city of Yakima , which is in the immediate vicinity of Union Gap. The band underlined this patriotic attitude by performing in Civil War uniforms and giving themselves military titles: "General" Gary Puckett (vocals), "Sergeant" Dwight Bements (saxophone), "Corporal" Kerry Chater (bass), "Private" Gary Withem (piano) and "Private" Paul Wheatbread (drums).
Puckett's signature baritone voice and the skills of producer and songwriter Jerry Fuller made the band one of the most famous and most played on radio in the late 1960s. In 1968, Puckett and his "soldiers" sold more records in the United States than any other band - including the Beatles .
In 1971 Puckett broke up the band and began a solo career, mostly playing and re-recording the band's classic songs. In 2001 he released the record At Christmas , which contained completely new material. The band's old hits are still selling, so far they have reached around 20 million copies worldwide.
