Union Gap is a city ( City ) in Yakima County in the State of Washington . As of the 2010 United States Census , the city had 6,047 inhabitants. Union Gap has a multifaceted history; in recent years it has become the shopping mall for the entire Yakima Valley after the Valley Mall and other agile stores settled here. The city's motto is “The old town with new ideas” (for example: “The old town with new ideas”). Part of the city is part of the Yakama .
history
Union Gap was originally called Yakima City and was officially recognized as such on November 23, 1883. When it was bypassed by the Northern Pacific Railroad in December 1884 , over 100 buildings were moved to the nearby station with rollers and the help of horses. The new city was baptized North Yakima. In 1918, North Yakima was simply renamed Yakima and the original city in the south was named Union Gap.

2010 Census
As of the 2010 census , there were 6,047 residents, 2,061 households, and 1,420 families in Union Gap. The population density was 462.3 per km ². There were 2,173 housing units at an average density of 166.1 per km².
The population consisted of 62.9% white , 0.9% African American , 2.6% Indian , 0.9% Asian , 29.1% other "races" and 3.6 % % from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 47.2% of the population.
Of the 2,061 households, 40.3% had children under the age of 18, 42.6% were run by married couples living together , 17.6% by single mothers and 8.6% by single fathers; 31.1% were non-families. 23.5% of the households were singles and 8.9% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.9 and the average family size was 3.43.
The median age in the city was 32.7 years. 28.9% of the population were under 18, 10.7% between 18 and 24, 25.3% between 25 and 44, 23.4% between 45 and 64 and 11.8 65 years or older. 50.5% of the population were men and 49.5% women.
Census 2000
As of the 2000 census , Union Gap had 5,621 residents, 2,070 households, and 1,407 families. The population density was 431.5 per km ². There were 2,210 housing units at an average density of 169.6 per km².
The population was 72.19% White , 0.41% African American , 2.24% Native American , 0.57% Asian , 0.09% Pacific Islander , 20.17% from other "races" and 4.32% from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 29.57% of the population.
Of the 2070 households, 33.8% had children under the age of 18, 46.7% were run by married couples living together, and 14.3% by single mothers; 32% were non-families. 26% of households were singles and 10.4% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size 3.2 people.
The median age in the city was 33 years. 28.5% of the population were under 18, 9.4% between 18 and 24, 28.4% between 25 and 44, 20.4% between 45 and 64 and 13.3 65 years or older. There were 99.4 men for every 100 women, and 97.3 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.
All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 30,676 and that of families was US $ 34,795. Men had a median income of US $ 25,802 compared to US $ 23,393 for women. The per capita income was US $ 13,102. About 14.9% of families and 18% of the total population lived below the poverty line ; this affected 24.2% of those under 18 and 9.9% of those over 65.
