Luther Hughes

Luther Hughes (born December 31, 1946 in Covington (Kentucky) ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , electric bass , composition ).

Luther Hughes comes from a musical family; after private lessons on the double bass, he attended 1964/65 the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and the Long Beach City College (graduated in 1965); he earned his bachelor's degree in 1979 from California State University, Long Beach . He took lessons from Alex Cirin , Thomas Martin, Nat Gangursky, Eileen Strang and Sue Raney. 1966-69 he was a member of the house band at the Playboy Club . In 1971 he moved to Los Angeles and then belonged to the formation The Three Sounds around the pianist Gene Harris . He has also recorded with Dave Pike , Ron Eschete , Joe Farrell , Mark Murphy and David Benoit . In 1985 he founded the fusion funk band Cahoots ; his debut album Luther Hughes & Cahoots ( Contemporary ) was written around 1987 .

He has also worked with Mundell Lowe , Joe Henderson , Carmen McRae , Willie Bobo , Horace Silver , Harold Land , Don Ellis , Joe Pass , Louis Bellson and Hampton Hawes throughout his career . In the field of jazz he was involved in 71 recording sessions between 1975 and 2016, in later years also with Kohn Pisano , Charlie Shoemake , Mort Weiss , Thom Rotella , Stix Hooper and the Tom Ranier / Glenn Cashman Sextet. He heads the Cannonball-Coltrane Project and the tribute band Luther Hughes & Friends: Remembering the Nat King Cole Trio and, with former members of Gene Harris, the formation HERK , Tom Ranier (piano), Ron Eschete (guitar) and Paul Kreibich ( Percussion). Hughes teaches at California State University in Fullerton and Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.
