Gary Smith (born July 26, 1954 in New Orleans ) is an American philosopher and cultural manager .

Gary Smith grew up in Austin, Texas . After graduating from school in 1972, he studied philosophy and German in Houston and Boston, and as a DAAD scholarship holder in 1974 in Frankfurt am Main . With a thesis on Walter Benjamin , he was at Bob Cohen and Marx Wartofsky 1989 doctorate . Between 1986 and 1992 Smith held teaching positions in Boston, Chicago and Potsdam as well as at the Free University of Berlin , where he taught Jewish studies and philosophy.

From 1992 to 1998 he headed the Einstein Forum in Potsdam, initially as a founding commissioner and from 1992 as director. There he established, among other things, the "Caputh Conversations", which were broadcast from Albert Einstein's summer house in Caputh, and the series "Legacies of Time". From 1997 to 2014 he was Managing Director of the American Academy in Berlin . Among other things, he published Benjaminiana. A biographical research , with Hans-Georg Puttnies; Gershom Scholem . In 2002 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his commitment to "building networks in scientific and cultural exchange on a national and international level" . "For the cultural and scientific development of the German-American friendship and for the enrichment of the city with intellectually demanding outstanding events", Smith received the Berlin State Order in 2011 .

Smith is married to the daughter of the former mayor Klaus Schütz ; he has a son from his first marriage and a son from his second marriage and a pair of twins.
