The Leopoldau gas and steam power plant on Petritschgasse in Vienna's 21st district of Floridsdorf was a gas and steam combined cycle power plant . At the moment only hot water boilers for district heating are in operation. Wien Energie is the operator and owner of the power plant .
history
The Leopoldau gas and steam power plant was built between 1973 (the foundation stone was laid on June 18) and the opening on February 17, 1975 as a rapidly deployable gas turbine power plant to cover peak demand.
The ongoing expansion of the district heating network in Vienna led to plans to convert the gas turbine power plant so that its waste heat can also be used. The conversion work to a gas and steam power plant was carried out between 1987 and 1988. Denitrification systems were also installed. The total cost was 837 million schillings, of which about 200 million schillings were used for environmental protection.
Location
The Leopoldau gas and steam power plant was built on the site of the disused Leopoldau gas plant in order to be able to use the existing natural gas pipelines for the fuel supply. Originally, however, Kagran was planned as the location.
technology
At the time of construction, the power plant, which can also be controlled from the Donaustadt steam power plant , was equipped with one of the three largest gas turbines in the world. The output was 120 megawatts.
By converting it into a gas and steam power plant, the Leopoldau power plant delivered 140 megawatts of electrical energy and 170 megawatts of heat output by around 2012 with an annual heat production of around 763 gigawatt hours.
The three-pass boilers now installed in the Leopoldau district heating plant have an installed capacity of 60 megawatts.
In addition, a power-to-heat system with a capacity of 20 MW was built on the power plant site and went into operation in October 2017. This is intended to convert electricity into heat and feed it into the district heating network in the event of any electricity surplus from renewable energies . In this way, surplus electricity can be used to decarbonise the heat supply via sector coupling .
